Movie Madness!

I spent this past weekend watching movies from old westerns to a couple of box office hits.  I have to say I'm not thrilled with the cost to see a movie anymore.

Lets start from the beginning. At home you have a choice of flipping thru the channels to see what's on or coming on, you can watch it whenever you want thanks to DVR and or you can go OnDemand or pay per view and rent at an outrageous rate of upwards to $6.99! Also just to watch your regular  channels you must have the digital converter boxes which some services require you to pay a fee of $2.00 or more per month depending on your service provider and the cable package you choose per month can be quite costly. I  know what you're thinking that's not bad, however you still have other options.

You can go the Blockbuster or Netflix routes at a cost of $8 or more a month depending on if you opt to go with streaming movies only to mail in DVD's or both. You have all the newest and latest technologies of I-Tunes, Amazon etc. to watch on your phones, iPods & iPads etc. as long as you pay for a data plan. You have the Redbox option of $1 per rental per day which I have found myself doing more & more lately for DVD new releases. The last option to see a movie has become an event in itself. Going to the Theater!

For a family of 5 just to see a movie runs about $50! That's more than what I expect to pay for a nice sit down dinner at the local Mexican resteraunt. If you add the common luxuries of Popcorn, fountain drinks & candy that can cost you more than it cost to see the movie itself! A regular box of candy runs $3.00 by itself. A small popcorn is $4.75, a small drink is $3.75 for that same family of 5 to have a small drink, popcorn and candy each the cost is $ 57.50 A ridiculous price for snacks and a drink, driving up the cost of a night out with the family for entertainment to well over $100 for 1 movie. That same family of 5 can eat a nice meal at Red Lobster for over $25 less!

In May of this year a consumer in Michigan actually filed a lawsuit against AMC theaters for these outrageous mark ups placed on food products. As sympathetic as I am to this man in the end nothing will change because there is no law against it. I seriously suggest to you all who like to see a good movie when it comes out at theaters to eat before you go and try the matinee times to save yourself the most money for a simple 2 1/2 hours of entertainment with the family.

  1. Well seeing that I am older, it has been rising through the years almost faster then other entertainment, other than bowling. For 2 hours of a movie and snacks you pay 20 to 30 dollars per person. I feel if people would wise up and boycott the movies for a few weeks you may see prices come down or their businesses close down. MF
